An essay on craft we keep returning to

The House · 18 May 2026

A short piece by a Dutch ceramicist on the difference between making and producing. Worth twenty minutes.

The piece begins with a workshop, a kiln that has run too hot, and a row of bowls that did not survive. It ends somewhere else entirely — closer to a meditation on what it means to be the only person who would notice the flaw. We have been passing it around the House for months. It seems to land differently for everyone. A founder reads it as a manifesto; a chef as an apology; a writer as a permission slip. If you would like a copy, write to us. We will send it on.
